A kid plays with an old car tyre in front of a charcoal stall. The high cost of Liquified Petroleum Gas means that many households still depend on charcoal to cook their meals. Ghana is gradually becoming a desert. The trees that aren’t chopped down for charcoal get chopped down for the “beautification of the city” or exported timber or used in the construction industry. Recent attempts to plant more trees in the driest parts of the country ended up being a scam that will forever taint the administration of President John Mahama of Ghana. #SADA #environment #corruption #ghana #africa #osu #accra Photo by Nana Kofi Acquah @africashowboy (Copyright: 2014). #nanakofiacquah #africashowboy

The Allocodrome in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. We ordered grilled chicken and fish smothered in a tomato/onion/cucumber vinaigrette, served with attieke and fried plantains (so delicious - hard to beat Ivoirian cuisine). Then these guys delivered a couple bottles of cold beer. They then launched into an animated conversation next to our table that went on for some time, full of laughing and arguing and much gesticulating with their arms. Then she walked by. And it all came to a full and silent halt. January 2013. Last night my car broke down and a gentleman asked me to park it in his yard, where it will be safe. I couldn’t see much. I went there this morning to thank him and get the car and this was the scene that met me. “Lakeside Beach” is definitely one of Accra’s hidden gems. The woman is crossing the lagoon on the bridge to go sell her food on the beach. Photo by Nana Kofi Acquah @africashowboy (Copyright: 2014). #Accra #Ghana #Africa

Everyday Africa goes to the Bronx. Today was the first day of an eight-week after-school program with 7th and 8th graders, using our images to break down stereotypes of life in Africa. In the end the students will launch their own Everyday Bronx project. Here the students discuss an image by @janehahn. Special to thanks to Open Society Foundations, the Pulitzer Center, The LAMP, Uncharted Digital, and @bronxdocumentarycenter. Photo by @austin_merrill. #africa #bronx #bdc #school #students

Kantamanto Market brims with activity on a Saturday morning. This is a second-hand goods “broni wawu” market. It is a good place to find quality items at affordable prices. A lot of brand new items in shops are cheap Chinese imitations but since most of the second-hand goods come from Europe and America, the quality is perceived to be better. And for the prices they sell, you can’t get a better deal anywhere else. “Broni Wawu” means “Dead white people’s stuff”. A photographer snaps a group of visitors at Le Monument de la Renaissance Africaine (Monument of African Renaissance) in Dakar, Senegal. The monument, built by the North Koreans under former President Abdoulaye Wade, is very controversial as the scantily clad figures are seen by many to be un-Islamic, sexist and a waste of $27 million. Men wait for a haircut at a barbershop in the remaining section of Badia East, an informal settlement in Lagos, Nigeria in February 2014. One year earlier, hundreds of households woke to construction equipment demolishing their community on order from the Lagos State Government with little or notice. Most had minutes to reach safety, losing their homes and possessions. Thousands are still displaced one year later. Badia East is one of the communities that should have benefited from a World Bank funded $200 million “slum upgrade” project but the Lagos State Government failed to abide by policies that would have notified and resettled residents properly.
