The Allocodrome in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. We ordered grilled chicken and fish smothered in a tomato/onion/cucumber vinaigrette, served with attieke and fried plantains (so delicious - hard to beat Ivoirian cuisine). Then these guys delivered a couple bottles of cold beer. They then launched into an animated conversation next to our table that went on for some time, full of laughing and arguing and much gesticulating with their arms. Then she walked by. And it all came to a full and silent halt. January 2013. Jean Armel, 29, in Allahteresekro, a village about three hours north of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. He was excited to learn that the Red Sox, after decades of coming up short, had won two World Series in the last ten years. “Champions!” he cried out to his friends. The flag, bicycle tire, etc, are helping weigh down a tarp that provides cover from the sun as he and his friends pass the time playing games and drinking moonshine. He offered me a swig. I took a quick smell and declined. Photo by @austin_merrill. January 2013. #ivorycoast #cotedivoire #abidjan #flag #americanflag #bicycle #moonshine #boston #redsox #baseball #bostonredsox #africa

A man named Innocent stands at the small clothing shop he keeps inside a market in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on January 15, 2013. “I want to be independent financially. I want to be I independent spiritually. I want to be independent morally,” he says of his strong work ethic. Innocent is also a pastor. He once owned a large clothing store, but it was destroyed in heavy fighting during the country’s bout of post-election violence in 2011.
